Pump Types and Applications: Seven different capacity deep well centrifugal pumps were developed in the Reactor Project Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for circulating liquid metals and molten salts in the 1100-1500°F temperature range. These pumps were used in metallurgy, heat transfer, and reactor experiments.

Design Features: Each pump uses an almost conventional bearing assembly to support a vertical shaft and an impeller suspended in a vessel containing a high temperature liquid and an inert cover gas. The drive motor and lubrication equipment are located external to the pump. Seven different models of deep well pumps were manufactured and accumulated approximately 400,000 hours of operating time in the 1100-1500°F temperature range.

High Temperature Centrifugal Pump Construction Description: Main Components: Deep well centrifugal pumps are constructed of two main components: a rotating element that can be removed from the pump and a more permanently mounted fixed element. The rotating element includes the bearing housing, shaft, impeller, thermal baffle, and top pump casing. The fixed elements include the pump tank, volute, inlet and outlet nozzles, and anchor brackets.
· Lubrication System: To use commercially available standard bearings and lubricants, the lubricant-coolant temperature in the bearing housing is maintained in the range of 135-175°F. This is achieved by inserting a heat radiation baffle and a liquid-cooled radiator between the surface of the system liquid in the pump tank and the bottom of the bearing housing.

Operating Hours of High-Temperature Centrifugal Pumps: · Cumulative Operating Hours: The cumulative operating hours of seven pump models in molten salt and liquid metal service at high temperatures of 1100-1500°F are conservatively estimated to be 407,000 hours. Among them, the LFB, DAC, DANA, MF, MN, PKA and PKP models have accumulated different number of hours.

Testing and Verification: All pumps produced for reactor operation must pass cold and hot swing tests, including the application of several thermal cycles. The cold swing test checks the bearings, shaft seals, all static seals, thermocouples and seal leak removal systems for proper operation.

Rotating Element Issues: The development of rotating elements includes the selection of bearings and ensuring that they are properly installed on the shaft and bearing housing. An appropriate lower seal was developed to act as the primary barrier between the lubricant in the bearing housing and the cover gas and system fluid in the pump tank.

Fixed Component Problems: Fixed component problems can be divided into four arbitrary groups: shaft-impeller running clearances, pump performance characteristics, pump tank fluid characteristics, and temperature gradient problems. Shaft and impeller running clearance problems at high temperatures arise from differential thermal expansion between rotating and fixed components in the axial direction, deflection of the shaft caused by radial forces when the pump is operated away from the design point.

Nuclear Operations: Applications in Nuclear Reactor Experiments: Deep well pumps were used in aircraft reactor experiments where these pumps circulated radioactive fluids, but the radioactivity levels were lower due to the lower reactor power. If the pump is to circulate highly radioactive fluids and is located within a shielded volume, it is necessary to minimize the effects of radiation on the circulating lubricant, leaking lubricant, and elastomeric static seals, and provide cooling to remove heat deposited by direct nuclear radiation in the pump structural materials at acceptable temperature levels.
